Have you ever walked into a room and instantly felt drawn to or repelled by someone without knowing why?

That subtle sense might be tied to what many believe is a person’s aura.

In this post, we’re diving into the basics of what it is, why it makes a hot topic, and how understanding your own energy can deepen your connection with yourself and others.

And for the aura’s colors decoding (yes, there’s the whole colors part that we’ll discuss, so no worries if you’re not familiar with it!), you’ll find a link to the blog post explaining them all, at the very end of this blog post. 🙂

Let’s start!

What Is an Aura?

At its core, an aura is thought to be a field of subtle, electromagnetic energy that surrounds the body. Many spiritual traditions believe it reflects your physical health, emotional state, mental activity, and spiritual awareness.

In simpler terms: your aura is like your energetic fingerprint. Just as your mood, posture, or tone of voice can give away how you’re feeling, your aura is believed to broadcast your inner world on a more subtle level.

A Brief History of Auras

The concept of an energy field surrounding the body isn’t new, and it isn’t tied to just one belief system. Here are a few historical highlights:

Ancient India
In Vedic philosophy and Ayurveda, the energy body is described through chakras and prana (life force). The aura is often seen as an extension of this subtle energy system.

China
In traditional Chinese medicine, the body is animated by qi (or chi), another form of vital energy that flows through and around the body.

Christian and Buddhist Art
You’ve likely seen depictions of saints, deities, or enlightened beings surrounded by glowing halos or radiant light, which is a symbolic interpretation of the aura.

Theosophy & Western Esotericism
In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, mystics and metaphysical thinkers like Helena Blavatsky and Charles Leadbeater wrote extensively about auras, popularizing the idea in Western spiritual circles.

Modern Holistic Practices
Today, the aura is a common topic in energy healing, intuitive practices, and even some types of wellness tech that aim to visually capture or read your energy field.

The Aura as an Energy Field

People who work with energy often describe the aura as layered, with each layer corresponding to different aspects of your being, such as the physical body, emotions, thoughts, and spiritual essence. These layers are thought to interact constantly, both with each other but also with your surroundings.

Your aura isn’t static, it changes based on your mood, health, environment, and even the people around you. Think of it like your energetic weather – sometimes sunny, sometimes stormy.

Do Animals and Other Beings Have Auras Too?

Many spiritual and energy-based traditions believe that all living beings have an aura, not just humans. Animals, plants, and even certain places are thought to emit their own unique energy fields.

Animals
Animals are often seen as highly intuitive and energetically sensitive. Their auras are believed to reflect their natural instincts, emotions, and well-being. Some energy practitioners say that animals can even pick up on human energy and respond to shifts in mood or vibration; this might explain why your pet suddenly curls up beside you when you’re feeling down.

Just like humans, animals’ auras may vary in intensity, color, or clarity depending on their health, environment, and emotional state. For example: A calm, healthy pet might have a strong, steady aura, while an anxious or ill animal may show signs of energetic imbalance.

Energy healing techniques like Reiki for animals are sometimes used to support the energetic well-being of pets, horses, and other animals, with anecdotal evidence of improved mood and healing response.

Plants and Other Life Forms
While subtler, plants are also believed to have auras. Some people report sensing calm, gentle energy fields around trees or flowers, especially when spending time in nature. Practices like forest bathing or grounding often reference this energetic connection, even if not by name.

Sacred Places and Spaces
Spaces like sacred temples, natural wonders, or even your own home are thought to hold energetic resonance too, meaning they can carry an aura that affects how you feel when you’re there. This is why practices like space clearing or smudging exist, to shift or reset the energetic tone of a space, as much as it’s possible.

Can You See or Sense Auras?

Some individuals claim that they are able to naturally see auras, describing them as colors, lights, or hazy glows around people or animals. Others describe sensing them through intuition, emotional impressions, or physical sensations (like feeling someone’s vibe or energy).

Many believe that they can be trained to perceive or feel the auras, through the meditation, visualization exercises, or working with the energy healers and intuitive readers.

Exploring Auras in the Modern World

The main ways people explore auras today include:

Aura photography
Devices like Kirlian or biofeedback cameras attempt to capture visual representations of your energy field.

Energy healing
Practices like Reiki, pranic healing, or chakra balancing often include aura cleansing or strengthening techniques.

Meditation & Visualization
Techniques that help you tune in to your inner state can also heighten awareness of your aura.

Aura readings
Intuitive practitioners may offer insights into your energy field and what it might be saying about your life, habits, or emotions.

Why Understanding Your Aura Matters

Getting in touch with your aura can be a tool for self-awareness and emotional balance. Many find that learning to sense or work with their energy helps with numerous things, including:

  • recognizing emotional patterns or stress signals;
  • developing stronger personal boundaries;
  • becoming more sensitive to the energies of spaces or relationships;
  • supporting spiritual or meditative practices.

Even if you’re not sure what to believe, tuning into your own energetic presence can already enhance your mindfulness and self-care (energetic presence is not the same thing as aura, although they are related in a way; we’ll try to bring more information on it in the future).

What About Aura Colors?

Each aura color is believed to reflect different aspects of your mood, personality, and spiritual state. As me mentioned at the begining of this blog post, here’s the guide explaining the entire world of those colors:

Now that you may have learned something new or confirmed something you’ve been thinking of, feel free to leave a comment maybe including the answers to the following questions:
Have you ever felt someone’s energy without seeing it?
Do you notice shifts in how you feel around different people or places?

We always look forward to hearing from you. 🙂
